Trip to Hoagland Branch Sat Aug 7 – perfect weather – swimming in Dead-Man’s Hole – walked between two bridges. No other trips this year. Blueberries reported very sparse and also no time. Paul not here this year due to summer job, Sarah working at Ann’s World’s End hot dog concession and living in Shunk. Also no bridge construction this year. Henry swam from house to house every morning at 6:30, but all alone this year. Missed only one day due to heavy rain. Lake is very warm. Dale makes barbecue chicken for 70+ people each Sunday. One night we had one whole bushel of corn (bread & butter). 71 ears (for $2.00). Adam & Caroline tied for first place with 10 ears each. henry came in 2nd with 9. Elizabeth 3rd with 8.
Another night was Christmas Eve (Wednesday) with blanket tree made by Weenies and Tweenies, using music stand and canvas bag for skeleton. Sat night was New Year Eve. (Thanksgiving had already been celebrated at Weir Meadow on day of Ford’s departure from Weston.)
Major festivity was (first) Annual Banquet of the Nancy Drew Fan Club, by courtesy of the Shunk Chapter (Margaret, Juliet, Nina, Sarah, Ann, Mary). Menu: Hors d’ouvres: Scarlet Slipper Cherry Punch, A Keene Soup, Missing Map Cheese Wafers; Main Course: Moss-Covered Mansion Fruit Gelatin, Mysterious Mennekin Casserole, Crooked Bannister Corn Bread; Dessert: Twisted Candle Peach Crisp.
The beavers have built a new dam on East spring feeding into lake – it has just been made water-tight. Many deer visits, no bears seen this year. This was mostly a people visit with much fare … talking and little activity.

August 25: Many thanks to Fords and Baumunks for a happy week. nanny left this morning for Kansas City. considerably more cheerful and much stronger than a week ago. Now we are ready to head back to Ohio. We never made it to New England, but instead we got to know the Baumunks – senior and junior – Fred, Ann, Jim, Peg + Bill helped bring in the Eby cows + collect eggs – Ann helped at the concession stand and got reacquanted with Sarah – all in all, a delightful vacation. We leave with happy memories and a tape of Barney Google to bring them back if we start to forget.
