Lake House 76

  • New bookcases and window seats in living room
  • New ventilation scheme under house
  • A little more parking area

6/29: Ken, Joanne, Caroline, Adam, Jason, Lucas arrive from Socorro in new red bus after a speedy 4-day trip (1980 miles), including a couple of hours in Bloomington with Sarah and Karin (Paul at Potomac Vegetable Farm in VA). Lake and Lake House especially peaceful and delightful.

Scattered offspring:

  • Paul at Vegetable Farm
  • Sarah being an … Lady in BMG
  • Nina in cast of Oklahoma! in Weston
  • Caroline off to Maine with Kolms, then spending time with friends in Weston.

Maybe we’ll all gather in August.

7/1: K & J with C & A drive to Boston, from where Ken departs direct for Socorro on July 4, J & A return soon thereafter to Shunk.

7/26: Otto Little – Dinner guest
Also Lawrence Baumunk and Caroline Baumunk

7/27: Marilyn, Dan & Ian Duryea arrived from Weston at 3:30 p.m.

7/28: Ken Ford came to visit (P.H. Baumunk’s barn burned.)

7/29-30: Champenys minus one arrive in wee hours (LGC, Sue, Art & Lee, J detained by work). Spend relaxed day walking, boating (dunking!) fishing, enjoying chapatis (sp?) prepared by V… (metallurgy student—PhD Socorro) & planned early departure in early am.

7/28 – 8/2: Came by air—Piper Lance N8759E—with Ken Ford for a short visit from Socorro, but it was more like a family get together. Most enjoyable week i ever had in 5 years in the USA. Prepared parota (chapati) for all of us. Recipe is as follows:

  1. Prepare mashed potato with seasoning mix (seasoning with oil, mustard, red pepper & curry powder).
  2. Make dough with ½ wheat + ½ white flour like for bread. Roll small chapatis and stuff potatoes already prepared and reroll with the shape of a pancake and fry it as if a pancake. Make as many and eat in groups.

Oh! By the way my name is Eswarahalli Venkatesh. I come from India Bangalore – India. I never thought i would feel homesick in this country. In this house i did. As much as I felt home sick, Joanne treated me so well that I found a second mother in her! I will be back here with my wife next year.

Juliet Kolm’s Blue Party – Graduation Party

Aug 10: Paul and Nancy arrive in the wee hours of the morning after a rather unexpected departure from Potomac Vegetable Farms. Originally intending to drive the old VW squareback they had to resort to other means (i.e. Greyhound) when the poor car failed to run with enough power to get itself up an incline.

Aug 15: Kolms’ last day – all vehicles depart tomorrow morning after our favorite summer in Shunk, the longest stay (2 weeks rather than 1). The T.E.M* (*terrestrial exploration module) had a new parking spot bulldozed for it. This summer will be remembered for its endless RAIN. There were only about four days of sunshine in 14!! Virtually no blueberries and corn very late!
Brought chainsaw (very old one!!) and bought wedge and sledge in Canton, and did much lumber work: cleared out Meditation Point, built one corduroy bridge, new fire-benches, cut several dead trees, and split a cord of firewood.
Hurricane Belle swept NJ coast and Long Island, but Boston only had its tail end. Weggles reported water failure at Weir Meadow. Henry worked on Mass Driver paper (for launching ore from the moon) and brought two Selectric typewriters (just in case one broke down).

Last night we had greater Baumunk family barbecue (60 corns, 40 half chickens) out today Dale and Lucy leave to join Ann and Mary in Kansas City to serve at republican National Convention (Ann is alternate delegate). (Ann and Mary drove down a week earlier). They will nominate Gerry Ford or Ronald reagan, to run against Jimmy Carter and Mondale.
Other notable news of the summer: Olympics in Montreal (spectacular Nadia Komenici of Romania); Viking I and II – first soft landings on Mars (checking for life); Edwin Land, pres. of Polaroid, foils kidnap atempt on company parking lot, gunmen flee.
In 2 weeks, Margaret returns to Bryn Mawr (after a semester off). Juliet enters Cornell, CJ enters Jr HS, Edna does her last year there.

A blue party was held for Juliet’s HS graduation, and the annula Nacy Drew banquet was also part of the social calendar.

John Bunzli arr July 12, left Aug 16. Spent an enjoyable summer swimming, sailing, eating, sleeping, talking, playing poker and setting records. And I almost forgot fishing. 1 5.7lb, 2 3.8lb, 2 3lb, and 30 total fish.

Aug. 11: Daddy & Sarah arr. from New Mexico in the p.m., (9:00?) Sarah with flu.

Aug 18: (a.m.) All Fords leave in bus to Socorro via Bloomington. (Sardines)
