5/30: Ken, Joanne, Jason, and Lucas arrived from Socorro in Volvo in 3½ days, for a brief respite before going on to Sarah’s graduation, Jason’s interviews, and the ambience of New England. Delightfully quiet and restful as usual. Chilly, permitting the comfort of a roaring fire.

6/1: Home sweet home. This is like my home. Only Wordsworth could have described the beauty of nature here. I would have missed this pleasure but for Vijaya, Venkatesh, Vinay … from India.

I was here again. A visitor from 1978.

6/1: How I wish you were all here when we came. We just missed you because we could not come yesterday. Hope to see you soon at least in Oklahoma. Love, Vijaya

As you are informed by Vijaya and Venkatesh we enjoyed the scene of Shunk. We would have felt more comfortable if you were here with us. This beautiful place brought some memory of …-coffee plantation in India. God bless you and your family with all comforts and cheers. By by!! – Goda Kasturi

6/1: We were here again after 3 years. Lot of things have happened since then. I got my MS in Pet-Eng, Vijaya, her B.S. in Pet-Eng. I was in Venezuela for a year, we had our first baby. Oh! So many things to talk about. But we all missed yo Mommy. This group spent two hours here at the lake, took pictures. Most of all we missed you. The gang was Dr. Kasturi ranga Iyengar, Mrs Goda Kasturi ~ VJ’s parents; H.K. Krishnapriyan ~ VJ’s brother; Vijaya, Venkatesh and Indarayan (Vinay)

We have a gift for your home from Venezuela. Hope you all enjoy it. regards to Ken and love to you and children.

Love Venkatesh

June 22: Monday – Seems like I’m repeating myself here, as for the 2nd time around I’ve just bopped into Shunk from 5 months in Europe, and will be again heading up to Hanover for a Dartmouth summer (check 1979!). This time I spent 3 months in Bourges, France as a TA for Dartmouth USA, living with the Philippe family. Eric and I both took the spring off and spent April and May absorbing art, pasta, and sun in Italy. It was wonderful! Since getting back to the states on June 1 I’ve been getting ready for Dartmouth and worrying about my GPA and other things which help decide one’s future. I went up to Dartmouth for graduation for a quick five days, said goodbye to all my friends who graduated without me (boo hoo…) Came back for another peaceful week at the lake. It’s been pretty rainy, we watch the lake rise slowly back to its normal level. We’ve been having a lot of late morning jogs, mid afternoon deck-painting (first sick pink, now sick mud color), early evening Scrabble and late evening D+D, topped off with Eby strawberries. It’s certainly nice to have a family and a place to come home to, the boys have each grown a foot since I last saw them, but they’re still recognizable.

I just finished James M. Cohn’s (Dartmouth ’81) first novel, typed on computer paper. I predict now that he will be a great writer!
Mommy, Jason, Lucas and I are off tomorrow at the crack of dawn for Hanover (time to recharge…) and various other northeast points. — Nina

After a no-Kolm 1980, two Kolms came in 1981. Elizabeth for a week, Henry for four days. Margaret & Juliat leading their own lives, Edna biking Europe with AYH, (England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Holland) Cornelia biking the cape, after a week at West Point. (!!) henry very busy with change of career from Academia to Industry (Kolm Associates, Flik Inc., Piezo Electric Products Inc.). (PEPi went public at 50¢ a share in May, now 1-5/8). Edna going to U. of N.H. this fall – Cornelia one more year of H.S.; (she is thinking of U. of Virginia). Juliet is getting tired of managing Radio Shack stores and looking for new jobs. Right now she is spending week in Virginia visiting Jeff Bloom (Naval Air Cadet and ex-classmate).

Weather is just perfect all of our stay!!! We did a lot of reminiscing and anticipating, and are all very thankful for each other and our many blessings (or good luck). We will remember this as the summer of the new docks, the origin of the brown-colored water (from Henry’s spilled coffee-glass), and the year Ann brought Bob home to stay. – Henry

– – A good week in Shunk after a good week in Maine, trying to share my passion for Echo Lake with Joanne, Jason and Lucas. We have brought splendid weather with us both places! We have relaxed, sailed, walked around the lake (and stepped right through some bridges!), joined Dale + Lucy for their 29th anniversary, had lunch with Ann in her new home in Shunk, and overeaten quite consistently! Our compatibility seems to grow with the years, regardless of how much time we spend together. What rare good fortune – (And we shouldn’t forget a pleasant stopover in Maine at Alvie Ye’s summer home –) — Elizabeth

LUCAS

I stayed for a week and a half by myself while everybody else was at Echo Lake. It was not un-boring. – Adam

I’ve been renewed. It’s been an unexpected joy to have four children for several week. Now, for the second time, I will drive across the country to N.M. without Ken. The Volvo is loaded to the ceiling (accordion, guitar) and, as usual, we plan to depart at the “crack of dawn.” It’s been lovely! (Mommy’s overused word).
Joanne

Wed. Sept 9: Eric and I drove down on Saturday from Boston / Cape Cod in our new Squareback for a few days of getting-away-from-it-all between terms. Joined the gang for the Labor Day bash on Sunday, then spent a couple days alone enjoying the fireplace, Scrabble and the rain. The new docks look beautiful, lake is full, leaves are turning. Off to Hanover Wednesday at noon.
