Wed. June 2, 1982: Lucas, Ken, and Joanne arrived from Socorro, New Mexico (plus Snowball and Merlin. S. set to work & caught two mice) (visited Venkatesh, Vijaya, + Vinay in Ponca City on the way). We left summer in Socorro and found cold rainy wintry weather in Penn. The fireplace kept us toasty.
Thurs. June 3: Joanne left for Boston to pick up Adam and Jason from Concord Academy. (That night the Kolms and J. made a small party for friend Bill Krag who is seriously ill.)
Fri, June 4: Adam, Jason, and J. arrived at Lake House II packed to the gills with C.A. stuff. All very eager for a summer at the lake.
June 9th: Ken & Joanne’s 20th! Whole family — cake, ice cream, and peanut butter pie.
June 10th: K. & J. off to Boston for a Green Party for Cornelia – then on to Dartmouth for Nina’s graduation! Saw N. playing in her quartet for a wedding – met her friends and their parents. Breakfasted at the anthropology museum – lunched with her “family.” Nina came off with a German Prize and cum laude. It was the coldest graduation ever. Dined with grandparents Sat. eve. Nina is off to Germany for the summer, then to Wsh. D.C. for her job in the fall.
June 13 (day of Dartmouth graduation): Back to Shunk to check out three boys caring for themselves. Adam & Lucas feeling sickly.
June 14: Ken & J. – off to Maryland to house hunt!! Rush – Rush – MUST find a house – or somewhere to live & put furniture. New job will take Fords from Land of Enchantment to maryland (land of ?). After 1½ days – sigh – no luck – what to do? One last look around brough the first ray of hope – we found one! After 7 years, again we are home-owners.
June 16th: Returned to Lake House II. Still raining! Much mud. Boys much improved – everything shipshape.
June 17th: An historic event: Nanny Ford, 89½ years old, drove herself from Shelby, N.C. to Shunk for a family celebration – in her honor. It was a two day trip and included a blowout.
18 June: Middy Ruth, Joe
June 18: Rick, Cynthia and Sarah Pennington; Pittsburgh, Pa
June 18: E Timblin (W.) was here too
This weekend has been a wonderful marvelous week long – Being here is spirit lifting! We can’t thank you enough for this marvelous reunion! Love to all, MR
20 June, Sun: Anne Gaëlle & I drove down in our Hertz Saturday, and are leaving already tomorrow morning – back to Boston. It was wonderful to see immediate & extended family, especially since I’m leaving for France next month for a year. I hadn’t seen Paul since Oct. & he didn’t recognize me w/my short hair. My first first-cousin-once-removed Sarah is adorable & has been the center of attention. I hope to pass through here in July…
Sarah
June 17–18–19–20–21– Wonderful, delightful vacation filled with lots of love & surprises – Mrs. Paul H. Ford – Edith T. Ford, or best known – just plain Nanny F. Many many thanks for everything!
22: Okay, I’ve been asked to write on what I’m doing this summer for posterity’s benefit. I’m recovering from C.A. and having a heck of a lot of fun.
22 Jun: Paul leaves for a return to Chicago. (arrived 18 Jun) Wonderful but too short visit. A beautiful place to gather with family and restore ragged edges due to too much big city living.
7/5: Arrived from desert – The Franks in an aging, conspicuous white Mercedes. On their way to a family reunion up in New Hampshire, then a visit to Anita’s parents in Florida, and back to New Mexico. It was to have been a brief stage-stop overnight. Well, it wasn’t. Reuning with Fords seemed more fun, particularly since New Hapshire had nothing beyond Shunk, so…
7/7: Franks hit the road again, threatening to return with/without notice. Anita, Alan, Loren
We loved being with you and only regretted our short (though longer than planned) stay. Come see us in Albuquerque. We shall return. Thanks & love to all of you. Anita
Sunday, July 11: Dowlingsp from Wellsboro. Some rain but not too much.

Friday, July 16: Tonight, I (Jason Ford) played over two triple words “shingler” in a Scrabble game for 158 points, and finished with 388 in a 3-person game. (Both lake records.)
Mon, July 19: Helen May Hotelling & daughter Resa May surprised Joann. Enjoyed the visit and the beautiful weather, enjoyed the lake.
Ronald Umpleby was here summer week of 21/7 – 26/7
1982 July 30 (Friday): Two Kolms – just Elizabeth and Henry! – leaving after four-day stay. No daughters this year! Edna & Cornelia working (Buttricks in Weston, Dairy Queen in Sudbury); Juliet managing a new store (Radio Shack, Brookline), Margaret living her own life in Boston (with Tony Oliver).
Elizabeth working on Afghan for Cornelia, who starts U. VA in 3 weeks!! Henry reading “The Right Stuff” and worrying about his enterprises; PEPI – (will the blowers sell?) Kolm Air Transport (will the Corporate Aviation business pick up before we go broke?) (with our Navajo Chieftain?) and newest of all: EML – Electromagnetic Launch Research (will the Navy and Air Force come up with some funding?)
Cornelia soloed at Beverly two weeks ago today!! At last a second generation pilot in the “family”, and just in time!!
Most significant change at the lake, without question, this year: the coming of the telephone to lakehouse II! The end of true isolation – the dawn of a new era of involvement. A fitting place to end Volume I and begin a more grown-up Volume II of the lake-log!!
No longer does the lake bring the whole family together—we haveburst the seams, like tent caterpillars. The telephone, formerly an unwanted intruder, has become a welcome link with those of us who come in spirit only!!
And the traditionals line-up has shrivelled to just five this year!!
Quiet, quiet week! Talk, working on the afghan, playing a little recorder, one morning of blueberry picking—that’s about the list. Grass has grown up by the dock so the view from the living room window is quite different: a lawn! I was taken fishing by Lawrence and Caroline: a restful slow putt-putt around the lake. Of course I didn’t catch anything but that was not my intention! – And a visit to the mills with Henry to see the whole operation and watch Adam work. – Ken left two days ago, Joanne and Jason left yesterday. Adam and we two had an eerie supper together and this morning we leave. Too short! but it will have to tide us over till 1983—
Sometime in Late Summer: I, Adam, stayed here, at the lake, for 2, possibly 3, weeks all by myself, alone. During that time, i worked at the saw mill and the pallet mill and made $$!! With that $$, i have to by a neer-ne-neer Blasto Amplifier (pronounced “Am-PLI-fier”). I was going to leave a space at the end of this so that, if anyone visited me, they could sign it. Foolish optimism. SPAS with SPAM, DISC, CLONES, and PICK-FREAKS!! SPACE FOR FREAK TO SIGN;

Aug. 22, 1982: end of summer – cold mornings already. Canned 8 qts black berries, mother’s canned green beans from Ann’s generous garden. It’s been wonderful to be here for most of the summer. Now we go to start new beginnings; Ken at U of Md., Lucas to White Oak Jr. High, and I to?
Joanne
Sept. 8, 1982: When we left the last time a robbing took place! Only valuable irreplaceable things taken—polar bear skin, silver dollars, etc. Now Adam, Jason and I are overnighting before going north to Concord Academy – J as jr., A as sr. – J.
Sunday, Oct. 17, 1982: Ken, Joanne, Lucas and Nina zip up from Silver Spring for an outdoor weekend at the lake. Arrive late Friday night (1:00 AM). Spend Saturday stacking wood, taking walks, doing jigsaw puzzles, reading in front of the fireplace. Poppop and Gramma, Ann and Bob, and Emily came for a family dinner. More hikes on Sunday, a little photography, a little Maryland work (Poppop: “Ken, how come you always work when you’re up here??”) The fall colors are beautiful—lots of yellow—and leaves are blowing all over the place (along with a few snowflakes yesterday!). It’s cold here!! Looks (and feels) almost like winter already. After a lesson on how to turn off the water in the house we will head back to warmer (but not more beautiful) climes. The weekend has been too short, alas! Nina
Oct 17: LUCAS FORD WAS HERE AGAIN
10/17: Incredible beauty, cool (!) and crisp, north wind, fast moving clouds—and some snow flurries. Now southbound.
