7/24: LUCAS REPLACES BATHROOM OVERHEAD LIGHT BULB!! It’s been out-of-service for as long as I can remember. I’m here alone this week, reading, writing (and typing [manually, no less]) letters, sailing, etc. There is not enough time for everything. I’m not bored. Painting the deck & dock reddish today & tomorrow.
7/29: GOD, WE HAVE BEEN WAITING ALMOST A YEAR, AND NOW THE SHUNK SQUAD HAS RETURN, WE’RE FINALLY BACK. I COULD NOT TAKE MY MIND OFF THIS PLACE ALL YEAR, AND LIKE LAST TIME IT’S FANTASTIC. THANKS ONCE AGAIN ADAM!!
JOE V
(WINNER OF THE TRIVIAL PURSUIT TORNAMENT, ONCE AGAIN)
P.S. NO BEARS AGAIN!!
7/30: Joe, you won on a stupid question! Well, I was glad to get back here again. I thought about this cabin (& its surrounding environment) even when I was Europe! (God, Russia is a hole!) Anyway, many thanks to the Ford family (especially Adam) for letting me get back to nature! Maybe if we all ever come again we’ll see a bear! God Bless Shunk!

7/30: Well it was nice again to get away from reality for a few days and just relax, I don’t think I slept past 10:00 in a year, thanks. Thank you very much to all the Fords mostly Adam and to the Baumunks, I am just sorry I missed Emily’s awesome party. Well I came in last again in the Shunk 500, but I loved it anyway, and I also caught my first fish. It was great and I hope I can come back some time in the future. But for now, Thanks and goodby

8/18: A scientific weekend was had by all. Hike time Saturday 1:19:24 timed by my new “amikacin” watch. Queen Anne’s Lace experiment conducted whereby black ink was placed in water with jar in hopes of turning flower black. Results are still breathlessly awaited, to be sent to myself Jan Kohl, MD

I observed that the lake & people inhabiting said place were wonderful & all had a fine time. Thanks for having me here. …
8/18: Great weekend with MBT folks and friends: Dan, Suzanne, Paul, Jan, David M., Chris (& Ken & Joanne)
Sailing, conoeing, hiking, swimming, Scrabble, play-reading, and eating (esp. blueberry pie).
AUG 20-23: For the first time in about 7 years, the entire Kolm family came to the lake!! Five Kolms from Boston via Navajo, on Tuesday, and Edna from geology camp in Montana on Wednesday!! Departing Friday for Charlottesville, where Cornelia starts her 3rd year. The only missing children are Nina (in Jordan!), and Lucas (working for software firm).
Short, but great re-union!! Berrying, canoeing, folkdancing, cam firing. Once again, quiet interlude in hectic summer. EML was acquired by KAMAN a week ago, and is busy on three major proposals. Hope to build first aircraft launcher in near future.
Henry couldn’t swim due to back pain. Everybody almost grown up!! Edna has only one semester to go!! Geology camp was “toughest thing she ever did”. Her equivalent of jump school. Cornelia just had one semester off in New Hampshire. Juliet is Chief Financial Officer of EML, Margaret is working for Mesler Software, following a year in New Zealand; hopefully they will all add a few words. henry retired (early) from MIT this spring (age 60!!!). Determined to reduce my workload to a reasonable level, and start reading and thinking again.
Haven’t been in Shunk for eight years! Seems as if I have changed very much, but this place very little! A wonderful vacation; now its back to the working world. Will have to study trivia all winter to prepare for the next reunion.
Margaret
As usual, it was wonderful—packed with talk of Nancy Drew, Trivial Pursuit, Spite & Malice, Dancing, jigsaw puzzles, hiking and berrying. “Probably” my last single summer!?!*! Juliet
We missed Nina and Lucas terribly!
After a semester of my first taste of the working life, Shunk was a wonderful vacation in transition back to college life… just 3 semesters left and then off to the Navy! Thank you all!
Cute spot. CJ (Cornelia) Cubby
I was here such a very short time, but it was wonderful. Nice to be here with close family and friends relaxing after such an intense 6 weeks. Now I’m off to finish off my education. And the . . . . ? – Edna
23-AUG-85: Paul and Sarah arrived Monday evening, Paul having picked Sarah up in NYC chez elle earlier that day. They stopped at the Delaware Water Gap on the way. Pretty. Paul had been touring a good part of New England for the past week: His trip started Some of the highlights of the road tour include: Niagara Falls, St. Lawrence Seaway including Eisenhower Lock, Lake Champlain, White Mts, Connecticut River, Vinylhaven ME, and overnight sail in Buzzards Bay and of course 4 wonderful days here in Shunk. We found some bear droppings but no bears. The pursuit of Trivial Pursuit became quite trivial.
Woodcutting & stacking & brush burning was a featured event. Certainly the highlight of the visit was the abundance of BLACKBERRIES!!! Berries for breakfast and many pies. Yum. Sara & Paul are now on their way to Bloomington via Potomac Vegetable Farms so Paul can visit Anna Newcomb’s new baby. Paul then heads back to Chicago Sunday to deal with real life again (at least for a month when he will head north to Minnesota to canoe the … waters for a week). So farewell to Shunk for another year.
– Paul
Wonderful few days in Shunk! w/most of the Fords & all of the Kolms. Folkdancing/Contradancing, s’mores, campfires, blackberry picking, my first pies (Eliz made the filling & crust & I did the rest), too much trivial pursuit, runs w/Daddy to end of road & back, & sound sleep! (And one hike around the lake & one sail). To Indiana now for 5 days – Haven’t been there since nearly 1 year ago when I had my wisdom teeth out. Goodbye Shunk! A bientôt – Sarah
Blackberry Summer!
A selected dinner question: What/where do you think you’ll be in 10 years?
- Elizabeth: I’ll be 67.
- Henry: I’ll be in a wheelchair.
- Sarah: 36! I’ll be a mother.
- Jason: The way it looks now, I’ll probably be graduating.
- Ken: I’ll be a wealthy lovable grandfather who is still trying for the diamond distance in the glider.
- Paul: I’ll have some land in New England, children—.
- Juliet: I’ll be a director of EML and mother of three.
- Cornelia: I’ll be a Lieutenant Commander in the USN.
- Adam: 30
- Caroline: Two children, house in country in New Mexico.
- Margaret: ———.
7/24/85: A magnificent week – Kolms & Fords (missing Nina and Lucas) and MBT folks. I almost stayed away from my desk all week. Now to Philly for a “desk fix.” Great dancing, and soaring with Dale – plus all the usual – sailing, moderate outdoor work, snoozing & snacking. read Russell Baker’s Growing Up (excellent – my era), started Cheever’s Home Before Dark and …’s pro-Star-Wars book.
Ken
A much needed vacation from my slave job at KGSW TV 14 in Albuquerque. Had fun playing T.P. with Kolms, talking about future husbands and future jobs, learned to make blackberry jam, canoed, sailed (still haven’t learned how) ATE, ate, ate, did puzzles and ate.
Caroline
9/2/85: It was great treat to visit this most wonderful place and become re-acquainted with the Ford family. A few days peace and rest with lovely people has helped charge my batteries—Thanks! Business and pleasure can be mixed after all!
Love Denny Petersen
9/2/85: In the opinion of some, this was for me a rite of initiation into country living (“Jeremy, you’re such a city boy!” – Nina intones in falsetto shriek.) Now we’re off for greyer pastures in N.Y.C. Shunk has been a peaceful and pleasant homestretch in this long and diverse summer. I can only hope for more Shunk weekends.
Jeremy Selman
9/2/85: A quick visit between Jordan and school in NYC. jeremy and I entertained the masses with show and tell of the latest in Arab fashions. It was nice to see many long un-seen faces from the past (it seems like everybody’s either married or pregnant..!!) I hope it won’t be another year before i get back here.
Nina
9/2/85: Had a great time until Adam decided to go into town and get a head on. Reluctanty, we agreed to go with him (Principally to keep him away from the state police). Well we got to the bar and Adam’s here saying “Hey babe” and winking at the barmaid, then he gets smart and sings out he wants bourbon, scotch and rye. Already out of control, you may imagine the trouble we had getting him out of the place alive.
Still recuperating Russell Goudy
10/20/85: Final 1985 visit. Ken, Joanne, and Lucas. Cool fireplace weather but not frigid. One day of rain, one day of sun.
Cut, split, and piled wood, cleared brush, and “winterized” house (Lawrence’s work). St. Louis beat MKC in first game of world series.
