Mother’s Day.
May 8: Came to check out the spring wild flowers – found carpets of spring beauties and add…tongue, some white violets, and fiddleheads just pushing their way out of the ground. Feasted on leeks which grow around the swampy areas along with skunk cabbages (hellebores, not skunk cabbage) The daffodils, which I plantes last fall, are a happy welcome sight.
Ken is in Az. making a third try for his long distance soaring badge. He had been at Irvine, CA, sharing in the Reines fest.

Memorial Day
5/28–30: Long weekend. Ken and Joanne from Philly. Hot even in Shunk. Wedding Fever running rampant.
Nice surprise visit from Ithaca: Nina, Paul, Francis, Eric (+ food!)
Ken proofread 4 chapters and whacked away at some lakeside weeds.
5/31/88: Fun trip, although we failed to accomplish our primary objective – to obtain a small pig as a pet. Francis & I did make sure the lake estuary was safe for …, although it may still be unchecked. We also met Nina’s wonderful relatives and jumped into a pile of sawdust. Thanks
Eric
5/31/88: Fun trip, although Eric spent too much time searching for a pig to bring home as a pet. I did quite a bit of strenuous exercise, though Nina, Eric, & Paul showed little interest in joining in. Sleeping in the boys room was difficult. First, pummeled by pillows, then having live fungus put in my bed. best part of trip was Eric’s attempt to hit softball into lake. The bat went further than the ball, & would have hit me had I not ducked.
Francis
May 31: Fun trip, although the barbeque pit did explode, and Eric did throw a baseball bat at Francis and I. Also, too bad about the lack of any pigs to domesticate.
I’m glad I’ve finally had a chance to come here and enjoy the lake without having exams hang over my head. I’ve also had a chance to buy some of that great pancake mix. Can’t wait to try it out. Thanks for the wonderful relaxing weekend.
Paul A. Kowert
Finally, Shunk without A-exams! Fortunately for Mommy and Daddy we showed up (unexpectedly) this weekend (w/10 lbs. of chicken) otherwise they would have starved. Now back to Ithaca to begin the summer. Nina

July 10, ’88: 60th Wedding Anniversary celebration for Grandma and Poppop at Lake House I. Open house from 2–5. Ken, Joanne, Nina, Adam, & Jason.
New Corning Ware mugs from Nina! New south deck – sleeping porch?
Dear Joanne
We had a wonderful time at your “summer camp,” and are feeling rested and relaxed. The lake was just what we needed.
Thank you for having us share in the celebration. Hope you don’t get too frazzled with all the wedding arrangements.
Enjoyed your nursing tree & the glider underneath it, too. Hope you enjoy the rest of this warm summer.
Sincerest regards, Andrew and Pam
I got married July 16. Yikes!

Mother
Hello again! We left N.J. at about 10:00 A.M. and arrived here ate 2:00 P.M. We had a wonderful time. It was very nice to get here just in time. Nina was about to leave to go to Princeton for her research work. Had good food, fabulous boat rides that Dr. Ford gave us. For the first time, Vinita was bold enough to get into the water (bold enough?! She wanted more boat rides. She said that she wanted to be in Shunk except during school days and go on the boat!!) Hari & my parents from India were also thrilled. My parents, I am surprised, remembered almost everything they had seen here during their last trip here (1981). They must have thoroughly enjoyed it last time too! Well, I can go on like this, but words do not suffice! See you again, Shunk!
Vijaya 7/24
Shunk, we are here again in 1988. The lake house is a place to relax, because you forget the world when you are in the lake house. Even a short stay is sufficient to get back to the civility, lost after working in the East coast.
Hari, a newly wed brother of VJ, my father in law & mother in law who are in this country for a visit also came with us to attend the party for Carolyne & her husband. This time we saw more people than ever before. Dad (my Fil) enjoyed the lake ride on the sailboat with Dr. Ford & Vinita. He also enjoyed the canoe ride with mom. Both Vinay & Vinita enjoyed the boat & canoe rides. Even though we were here only for 3 hours after a 4 hour drive & a four hour ride ahead was beautiful.
Mother, we enjoyed the visit as ever!

Sorry we could stay for only a little time, but sure had a lot of fun fun time. I liked the boat rides. I liked when dad tumbled over by pulling the canoe. July 24, 1988
We enjoyed the visit

This is my first visit to Shunk. In fact to any American family. I wish there are more families like this in the US. I enjoyed the food, boat rides, friendship and will sure be back in the near future. I have a friend in Pennsylvania!

US–SOVIET SUMMIT Nov. 6, 1988

The imperial yankee pigs have contributed to a deterioration of superpower relations, by creating an impasse in the negotiations at Camp Shunk. The delegation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics expresses its regret at the outcome and disappointment in the intransigence of the US delegation. Workers of the world are unified in condemning continued US violations of the 1972 ABM Treaty and refusal to adhere to a strict interpretation.
At least the venue is beautiful. Maybe there is something positive to be said about this country.
Thanks! Comrade Katrina …
Secretariat to Gen Sec Gorbachev.
As representative of the U.S. Department of State, I regret the … exposed by the Soviet delegation. Let us hope that the current state of relations between the participating sides will improve in the future. There is hope for progress in international relations and a future agreement! Signed in the beautiful setting.
