June 4: Here for a couple of mid-week days, planted marigolds, repaired wall, stained bench & front foundation.
Noticed clumps of Interrupted Fern along the grade. (Must transplant) 2 large maples down over compost heap – leaving an enormous gap in ground cover, – very shallow root system.
Celebrated Poppop’s 87 birthday here – with plenty of mashed potatoes. Dale & Lucy (Dale on crutches from knee operation), Ann & Bob & 4 yr. old Lindley.
Last Saturday at Cornell University, Nina earned a Ph.d. in International Affairs. What a joyful celebration! We parents & grandparents were there.
New arrival in family in 1993: Thomas Ford Eisenhood Feb. 8, 1993
June 13: Ken & Joanne here a brief spell. Put together 2 picnic tables to be used on grounds. Canoe out, swing up.
At 2 p.m. today we’ll go to Eagles Mere Country Club to have a dinner celebration for Mother & Daddy’s 65 (!) Wedding Anniversary.
I’ll drive back to Phila.; Ken will fly.
July 5, 1993: Hottest day of the year so far. The forest is ravaged by parasites. Ran out of pepper and dishwashing detergent—did not replace due to holiday. The fourth was splendid; had fun swimming and canoeing, but the cards were cursed. harry eaton
July 5, 1993: That’s funny. My cards were great. I came up with … friends for the weekend. Erica Buhl, a friend from way back. Harry Eaton, Erica’s main guy, engineer, and all-around dude. And Martha Duffy, my significant other, making her first of hopefully many trips up here. It’s hot. Erica and Harry want to get in that air conditioned car, and drive back to Martland.
Jason Ford
Not me! It’s perfect here. Glad we had the electric blankets!

July 17, 1993: A wonderful weekend break from the trials and tribulations of life at the big university. We went canoeing, roasted a leg of lamb, saw a lot of bats (happily), and even more white moths. Unhappily, Jeremy was unable to erect the tetherball set, a failure only partially compensated for by his underhanded victory at Risk.
As always, I’m looking forward eagerly to my return to Shumpeter

July 18, 1993: Thanx so much for the needed break from the hustle & bustle of Ithaca. Even though I succumbed to Jeremy in Risk this morning my 24 hours in Shunk had many high lights—the refreshing water, the delicious food, the fine fighting wine, the twanging frogs and the wonderful company. Thanks again
Joe Moore
Thank you for a wonderful & relaxing weekend.
– Peggy Tolen
7/18/93: During a lovely and relaxing two days here, I went canoeing, ate roast lamb, and drank Australian fighting wine, all for the first time. Best of all, I didn’t worry about my B-exam (dissertation defense) even once. Unfortunately, my offer to stay on as custodian for the rest of the summer was politely declined. Perhaps it’s just as well, since in two days I’ve already gained two pounds at least (too much butter, not enough canoeing!)
Thanks for a wonderful and memorable weekend that fully lived up to its advance billing.
Cathy Tufarillo
7/18/93: Once again, a lovely weekend in Shunk. I established myself as the undisputed “Risk” champion, overcame Paul’s resistance in a battle of wills in the canoe (thus saving Cathy from yet another visit to the lagoon), and generally ate, drank, & was merry. Clio joined us for the weekend but was too busy stalking things to pay any attention to me. Other than Clio, we didn’t see many wild animals here this time, although we did get to peek into a bird’s nest full of cheeping chicks. Well, off to Ithaca for the home stretch. I hope I will have a chance to visit Shunk again in summers to come.

AUG 1-7, 93: Ford-Kolm family reunion.
Hopefully the first of many (annual, biennial ??). Great experience in reinvigorating personal relations, family bonds. Thanks to Caroline (the younger) for planning the event two years in advance!!! Hopefully it will take less effort next time!! 100 percent attendance is a remarkable achievement, considering geographic distribution, professional commitments and family encumbrances (7 weenies of the next generation). 28 for dinner (4 dozen ears of corn!!) Bill Eisenhood distinguished himself heroically by cooking and baking most meals, and surviving a marine disaster (capsizing). We are grateful to everybody for coming – mostly at considerable effort and sacrifice!! And we hope everybody will feel it was worth-while and will come again!! Cheers!!!! Henry
(With apologies for all the videotaping)
One week here (away from work) is not enough! But i did have fun playing games, doing puzzles, driving the tractor around, and sleeping late. Sure the kids got annoying at times, but it was great to meet them all. And the PLAYER PIANO WORKS!! (It’s better than a stairmaster.) ADAM
A fantastic unforgettable chaotic reunion… the next generation got along “famously” (why do we ALL have such exceptional children?) … the (now) adults come together on a wonderful equal plane and develop new relationships from old old bonds.
The memories, the love and support from all those years here… they have affected us more deeply than probably any of us will ever realize!
THANK YOU ALL for the miles and the time!
Cornelia for the CESARI family from vermont
henry (3¾) alexander (2½) amadea (9mos.) and John
What a wonderful reunion! Thanks to Caroline for her persistence and patience in planning this get-together for the past few years. We enjoyed the player piano, vollyball, hiking around the lake (despite Justin’s run-in with the blueberry pail), Taboo, gin rummy, blueberrying, picnic at Hoagland brance, the campfire and somemores, seeing the mill again, pies, corn, decorating the fungaloid, Scrabble, TP, the big tent caper, frederika in the mason jar, Gloria in the mousetrap, and of course playing Pie Face! Thanks for the ever-present hospitality! Juliet, Dave, Eliot & Justin
I guess we have all been looking forward to this Reunion as much as I have. If it weren’t for Caroline’s planning and enthusiastic correspondence with the whole clan, we might have never pulled this off! What a great event!
It is sometimes hard to believe so many years have gone by since we were little mosnters running around. When we all arrive here, and stay up as late as possible playing games it feels like we never left (and never grew up!) Or did we grow up? I’m not so sure.
It was great being here with everyone. Reminiscing with family members, getting to know the spouses better, and meeting some of the newest “Ford-Kolm” members. The only thing is, it was too fast!
Shunk will always be a very special place to me, and of course all the people associated with it. We will never drift apart.

Labor Day weekend: Donna & Paul Wilhelm
Brunch Item: French Toast a la Grateful Bread – Compote of apple, nectarine; blueberries, sprinkled with conf. sugar. Scrumptious.
Labor Day 1993: Two impulsive decisions to come to Sullivan County this week-end coincided in a wonderful opportunity to get together again for a great supper, with a revival of s’more tradition, on the lovely serene lake shore. A great way to bring the summer to its “official” close Rena and Eli Burstein
We had a good (but short) visit and beautiful weather. We sailed & walked, learning about wildflowers and meeting Joanne’s favorite tree, Steak & corn by the lake ended a perfect day.

Over Columbus Day Weekend 1993: I made an amazing discovery! The mysterious name of SHUNK revealed itself as: The land, the lake, the house, the woods in these most glorious autumn colors, the railroad grade as a beautiful Baumunk homestead and peaceful oasis in Sullivan Co, PA. Many, many thanks Joanne and Ken, for inviting me to this wonderland and giving me such a joyous wonderful time together with you and Ruthanna and Herb Hadley!
Trude (Fuchs)
Columbus Day Weekend, October 10–11, 1993:
How lucky we are, to have enjoyed this short time in the wonderful atmosphere of this house in the woods and beside the lake! You, Joanne and Ken, create the bigger part of the atmosphere. We realize that the triangle – Philadelphia, Shunk, and New York – is about to become a straight line, omitting New York. perhaps both of you can enjoy this house and this beautiful location more often and for longer periods after Ken retires at the end of the month. We will enjoy hearing about it!
