2002

There’s been a great sadness this winter. Dear brother Dale died on Feb. 7, 2002. He was 71. Cause: heart attack. He was driving in the white pick-up—after a bank meeting & lunch at the Milky Way in Troy—and stopped in Mansfield, and got out of the truck & died.

Even the rain is beautiful here, softly falling in the trees, misting on the lake. I treasure the time I am allowed to spend in Shunk.

So eager to come. So reluctant to leave. – …

We came, we saw, we slept, we recharged! It’s too soon to go back to the hectic world, yet we do.

P.S. We had great music this time, thanks to Clinton & Rebecca!

Again, a perfect weekend. The only bad thing is having to go home! Thanks again, to everyone, for letting such good things happen.

I last came here on September 3rd. It’s now June 18th, and it’s a different world now. Since I was last here, our country has been attacked and I’ve joined the Naval Reserves. I’ve lost two uncles to heart attackes (Joe Woodward and Dale Baumunk). I lost my very good friend Caroline to cancer. She only came to the lake once in her life, but loved it.

But with all the changes and losses of three wonderful people, the lake is more or less the same. It’s wonderful we can rejuvenate in special places that don’t change. I had a great weekend here with friends. I appreciate all the hard work people do to maintain the lake and property.
It’s important! In times like these, it’s more important than ever.

7-20-02: Arrived here with a U-Haul trailer full of: Kayak, new utility cart, and piece of furniture for the front hall. I’m leaving way way way too soon. But it was nice and restful for the brief time i was here.
Adam

7-20-02: I had a lot of fun. I found bones of a rabbit, we collected leaves, I started a bug collection but now I must leave.
Thomas
P.S. I broke a blood vessel in my eye!

1st AUG 2002: Elizabeth, Margaret and Henry Kolm, came from Wayland and Kansas City via commercial air, for the first time, after 40 years via Navajo and Bonanzas. (The Navajo Chieftan was sold after Henry’s stroke in 97).
Elizabeth had pancreatic cancer upon our return from Europe in June 2001, and was given 3 months to live, but chemo-therapy every week and a miracle has given her another year! We are hoping to come again in 2003.
Margaret made blueberry pie and muffins, and barbeque ribs, Kansas City style, and left after three days. She toured Ann’s and Mary’s new houses, sailed and kayaked. henry swam daily, and Elizabeth pedaled and circumpedaled the lake. It was ahot and lazy week, and a sad one. Margaret played ping pong with Charlie, had a sailing lesson with Ken, and Henry learned Scrabble and played every night. he also worked on his memoirs, and read about Alma Rose, a very sad biography: Vienna to Auschwitz, where she died. She was a gifted violinist, niece of Alma Mahler Gropius Worfel.

Aug 3rd: What a summer! I spent 5 weeks and saw some of my uncles & aunts that I rarely see. I saw Adam for the first time since he left Albuquerque. I ate a lot of great food, and I probably grew another inch. (I’m 5’6″) I saw Joel, Rachael and Lindley more than usual this summer, which was nice. new kayak! Lots of sailing.

Swimming every day. Great fun.

August 4th
Came up for a weekend. Great blueberry picking! Tried water skiing for the first time without much luck. Oh, well. Great to see everyone!

Busy week. Eagles Mere, High Nob, Canyon Vista, Pleasant Stream, Picnic, Bike Riding (Nate: first time on a geared bike), Kayaks (Colin did a fine job at 5-3/4!), hiking, blueberries, black berries, sandbox, fishing (Colin says we caught a lot of water, but no fish), pies, cobbler, black holes, reading (Nate especially), play piano, campfire, bones, corn on the cob, people (Kolms, Charlie, Jason, Ian, Masha, great gramma, Linda Ladd), endless cups of coffee, Scrabble, morning fires, warm days, cool nights, diapers and bottles, tour of the sawmill, many trips to Bi-Lo to keep the masses fed, swimming, jet boat, tubing (Nate & Colin), waterskiing (Nate’s first attempts), sunsets, star gazing, bats, at least 11 dear (and fawns), Colin played with Masha, Ping pong, pleasant dinners looking over the still evening lake – a thoroughly rich & wonderful week for all.

Rena and Eli

12 Aug: Here for a hot week. Went in boats and played in the sand box and on the swings and picked blueberries and blackberries, and played in the rockig boat and hammock, and went swimming
Masha (age “3 almost 4.”)
We came via Hartford and Bast Chatham, only a week after Masha came back from Vienna. – Ian

Thank you for sharing your wonderful spot –

16 August 2002: We have had a glorious and very full 48 hours with you all. The wait of 30 years was well worth it! Since time is passing at increasing speed, we shall be back before you know it.
To our next get-together when ever. Helga & Dick
Thanks for sharing nature with us, thanks for sharing memories and thanks for being friends. We loved the visit but above all we love being with you.

29 Aug: After a very hot summer, we depart in rain. Dale was missed—very much.
Joanne & Ken

2 Sep 2002: harry eaton Rebecca Nielsen

Striving not to be chatty like he usually is. How’d he do? We participated in activities high minded and low—even wrote prayers while we butchered Shakespeare. Thank you for a wonderful time! Erica Buhl

As usual, there’s no place like Shunk—crimson dragonflies, spotted fawns, many baby frogs, canoeing, walking, and most blessed of all, silence—and laughter with friends. Many thanks!

2 Sep 2002: I already signed once this summer, so I wouldn’t sign again, except that I saw four bears while driving up on the Marsh Hill—Ellenton road. Big ones. That’s all.

9/7/02: Mommy, Daddy, and I were here for 2.5 days. I’m in transit to Stanford, CA for the year (with cat in tow. Mark arrived there last night by car). Two perfect days here. Mommy and I went through Gramma’s dresser and packed clothes, we visited Gramma, read novels, picked a few blueberries. Too short….

8/10/02: The true picture of nature, its silence—I experienced here, when we visited Shunk home. The rare experience of firewood was great. Vijaya, Ravi and Ravichandra and I sat in front of the firewood and gave a music concert for almost an hour. That was great. Only in a place like Shunk we can think of peace and serenity. Thank you Uncle and Aunty for enabling us to do this in your Great Summer House. And how can I miss Vijaya, Venkatesh for bringing us all over here for this amazing environment and atmosphere. Thanks again.
Neela

Nature has showered her beautiful beauty upon this place. Such a nice place, so serene, so pleasant, so calm, so attractive that anybody wants to live here, but not to leave. How I wish I could spend some more time here. A place to be remembered for ever.

10–7-8–02: As always this was the best time we had this trip. We went to Pittsburgh, Pa, Wheeling, WVA, the … temple, then Niagara Falls, stayed there & came to Shunk on 10.7.02.
Spoke to Joanne, visited Lucy @ Lakehouse I on 10.8.02 – Visited grandma, spent an hour with her. She @ first did not want to remember us, but later she did with vivid memories of all of us. She was the best grandma. Today we are leaving for New Jersey. But we will be back again.
The fire @ the fireplace was a bit smokey @ first but gave us (with mother’s help) immense pleasure & comfort throughout the night to morning.
Grandpa Kasturi, Tata Munisuvata & Savi…, Neela, Ravi & Ravichandra came with us (Vijaya & Venkatesh). It was a gret pleasure be at Shunk. Made … to Vinita (2) Vinay (3) Joanne (1).

I feel extremely happy to be here and get rehabilitated (both physical and spiritual) after surviving a major surgery (back) in April 2002. I wish all the best for the house.

October 24, 2002
A grand apple picking trip. – 5 bushels of Ida Reds and 2 of Empires at Landon’s orchard for Joanne, Trudy Fuchs and Donna Wilhelm. We live well with cheerful fires, electric blankets, delicious food. A osprey with gleaming white underparts sat regally in a tall tree and soared over the lake. A water … flitted near the lake shore. Thanks Joanne – Donna

A rare treat to spend time here again and again.
Iooooooo DANK! Trude
