Mother (94) to Ken

“When they sell the other house, you should sell this house and you should get just as much for it, house & barn, because whoever buys the other house will need a place for their servants to live.”

A year of change for all of us!! Mid-career change!! Ahunk is an island of stability and tranquility.

July 31, 1983: Don Salmon found Shunk, Penn. to be very much to his liking; with the lake and forest holding a special appeal. It was a wonderful way to spend his birthday. Being with the Fords only served as a reminder of why they were so greatly enjoyed and admired in Socorro.
This trip afforded a little time to learn about MBT, the new company that Dr. Ford will head, and to get an up-date on Dr. Kolm’s numerous enterprises.
The weekend proved so enjoyable that only regret is that Don did not call Joyce and tell her to fly out. Well Shunk is a special place.

Caroline was here 8/6–7

12 AUG 83: Paul was here. Stopped over one night en route to Boston & Pinewoods dance camp from Silver Spring. Turned out to be Ann & Bob’s anniversary so ended up eating a delicious meal with them + Gramma + Poppop + a friend of Emily’s named Karen who is filling in for Emily while she’s on vacation. For such a short visit there was plenty of excitement. For some reason I thought the dinner was going to be at lakehouse I instead of down in Shunk so i paddled teh canoe over to the house, wandered around but didn’t see anybody. So i went into the breezeway and tried the door. It opened and before I had time to figure out what the little red light was for I had set off the burgler alarm. Now I’ve done it, I thought. I ran to the phone in the house thinking I’d call someone to let them know what had happened, but there were no numbers and no phone book. I picked up the receiver and was met by a loud buzzing. I figured that the alarm had taken over the phone lines—in fact it called about 5 different places announcing a burgalry in progress. My next plan was to drive out and get to a phone in Shunk. So i sprinted back to Lakehouse II through the woods, and took off for town. Just after passing the gate Bob & Poppop drove in and I explained as they suspected that I had set off the alarm. Surprisingly, as loud as the siren seemed at the house, it couldn’t be heard from the grade. Poppop was surprised that the door had been unlocked. If it hadn’t it would have stopped me and I’d have on my to Shunk for dinner—late but without all the excitement. I kept going, Bob & Poppop went down to reset the alarm. As I drove down the mountain I was met by 3 pickups zooming up the hill. I figured they were responding to the call and was surprised they didn’t react to a strange car driving the other way. In fact it was various volunteer firemen types. Ann had gone off to Maple Summit to catch the marauders as they made their escape out the back. We all finally did get settled down to a nice dinner.

The weather is grey and rainy, but this morning, after sleeping in kind of late, I got out for a canoe ride & blueberry picking. The picking was pretty slim but I got enough for a mess of muffins which I’ll … up at the Kolms tomorrow morning. It’s strangely quiet here with only Adam & his kitten Moonset but as beautiful as ever. These grey windy rainy days at the lake, I remember many of them, either tromping through the woods wet + drippy or idling away the afternoon with old magazines and a fire. Next time I’m here I’ll have to make sure there’s more of a crowd and my visit is a little longer.
