January 2: Nina, Joanne winter visit.
May 18–19: Opening up. Gorgeous. Cool. Fireplace weather
The Joanne Memorial Stone Wall began!
June 20: Festivities begin – leading up to Emily’s wedding to Brian Wilken on Sat. June 22.
Dinner guests: Gramma & Poppop, Dale & Lucy, Ann & Bob & Lindley (2), Mary & Steve & Joel (2), Ben & Daisy Lindley, Emily & Rhonda
June 20: Wendy & Paul arrived late, after midnight. Took a DASN 8 prop from Pitts. to Williamsport. Car rental $17/day. Some things are still a deal.
June 23: Paul & Wendy leave. Too short a visit. Think we saw an osprey soaring over the lake. Many of us took a hike up to Maple Summit. First visit for Wendy, first time since Mary’s wedding since June 89 weekend.
6/23: Sarah, Jason & Caroline were here for weekend (for Emily’s wedding 6/22/91).
June 23: I’m here for the first time, down with Nina for Emily’s wedding. Hmm… the whole family – Ford & Baumunk – in one fell swoop. Nothing like jumping in and swimming. Nina’s thumbnail sketches as we drove down I-87 helped keep everyone straight. I guess I was on display (“so, is this your new boyfriend?” asked Poppop), but I felt right at home sitting ’round the table late at night with all – well almost all – the siblings. I didn’t see a bear (though some bear droppings … Joanne). Hopefully next time.
Andy
I was here too – much fun seeing everyone again. Off to Ithaca for a night then back to Boston.
Nina
June 24: Emily & Brian’s wedding was lovely in every way. ~210 people assembled on the lawn in front of a newly built white birch fence, looking over the lake. The minister had unusually good words to say – Brian’s sister Judy sang. The family 2 year olds, Lindley & Joel, took part. Our Recorder Consort – Ken, Paul, Nina & I – played during reception line. Good dinner, followed by great dancing. Many babies & children! 11 under 2½! No cries were heard.
Lucas parked cars & rang the bell.
Families represented were: Ladds (12), Harts (13), Lindleys (~17), Fords (10) – youngest: Patrick (Linda’s), 2 weeks. Oldest: Aunt Amber.
July 11, 1991: We were here today but you weren’t. I heard about Emily’s wedding. How was it. Pop took a lot of pictures. We went to the saw mill with Grandpop Baumunk. We saw how they make the lumber. See you everybody.
– Vinay Venkatesh
I came here today. But you were not here. We went to the sawmill with Grandpa Baumunk. See you later.

July 11, 1991: Happy anniversary to Mary and Steve in Australia.
We (Raj, Vijaya, Vinay & Vinita Venkatesh) wanted to surprise mom and Ken. But we got surprised by the gate at the RR track and them being in Boston area with the Russians. Went to the store. Lucy recognized and offered the key to the house. Visited Grandpa & Grandma and had breakfast there. Grandpa took us to the mill and we picked some blue berries & … berry. Yum! They are so good. We had our lunch. Took several pictures. We will, hopefully, be back in Aug before Vijaya’s parents go to India for a visit.
We missed you mom! Ken is having another operation? Good luck and all the strength to him. Speedy recovery too!
It was great to be back here. We want to see the whole gang.
Venkatesh.
Aug 6 – 8 1991: Arrived Tues night late after 12 long hours of driving from Dennisport, Ma. Spent @ 2 days Fishing, resting, sunning and relaxing. For John, saw a lot of people he had not seen in years. For Diane, met many new and friendly people. John caught several bass (not 37 this time) but threw them back to grow larger for his next visit. Now we’re on our way back to Ohio, and more time with the Bunzli’s. Sun we leave to go back to Boulder, our home, and our three cats. Thanks very much for everything.
– Diane Henzberg & John Bunzli
Aug 9–10 1991: We are very grateful for your invitation. We had a very good time. It was nice to get out of dusty New-York and get a “piece” of nature. We were glad to meet your wonderful friends and parents. You’ve got a very lovely house and a beautiful forest, but the best thing around here is you. We enjoyed talking to you and being with you very much. thanks for being patient with us, for your interest and participation in our life, and thank you for the unforgetable days we spent here.
Anna, Masha and Boris Spektor
6-13 Aug 1991: Only Elizabeth and henry this year – our 30th, I think. Came in Navajo & Hertz car, Ken recovering from second operation, Henry from “lumbar dislocation” (or whatever the chiropractor calls it). Discovered both Ken and I just upgraded to ZEOS notebook computers. I brought DOS 5.0 upgrade, Procomm Plus, new modem, Quick-Basic. Both of us reading “Space” (Michner). Hot debate about cold fusion, Ken read Mallove”s “Fire from Ice”. First issue of “Chaos” just out. Lots of business calls, faxes, overnight mails. I am in 3 new ventures: Magnaplane International, Paramag Corp, and Space Rail Corp. This fall will tell whether they are “go”. Lake lowest ever: 18″ below top of sluice boards. Dry July – corn very retarded – berries scarce. Henry
~ And while the “boys” sat side by side at their computers, the “girls” walked, talked, did knitting and needlework, chased the lone beaver around the lake, and (with Ken) played music, Scrabble, and Boggle. Also a great feast at the Fire Hall! And plans laid for our England trip next month!
. . . Elizabeth.

8/21/91: The Year of the Tractor!
Ken and Joanne spent three great weeks here, partly alone, partly enjoying visits by Spektors, Kolms, and Irmgard and Phoebe. ken, pretending to be helpless, worked away at desk and phone while … knitted. Joanne, pretending to be Paul Bunyan, built walls, hauled dirt and gravel, planted trees (and cooked and cleaned).

- Jack O’Lantern, Omp… ol… , deep orange color, growing under red pines (plantation area). This is a probable identification only.
- Artist’s Cork, … applanatum, many growing on dead beeches, particularly by road on west side of lake. This is the fungus used by the Fords to record their annual summer activities.
- Clustered Coral, Ra… … , growing on dead stump by road on west side of lake. Looks like pink cauliflower. By far the best find of the week from a gastronomic viewpoint!
- White …, Ch… … , growing on log by road on west side of lake.
- Northern Tooth Fungus, Clim… sep… , large patch, about 12″ x 8″, growing on a living sugar maple, about 200 yds north of the house.

Birds: Three Wood Ducks on the lake, 8/42. Flock of 10–20 Cedar Waxwings circling to catch flies over the lake most mornings & evenings. Spotted Sandpiper, Killdeer, Broadwinged Hawk, T.V., Downy Woodpecker, Kingfisher, White Breasted Nuthatch, Black Capped Chickadee, Song Sparrow, Slate Colored Junco (several flocks), Flicker, Yellowthroat, Pileated Woodpecker, a large number of feathers found in the woods near the north west end of the lake were largely the tail portion of a bird that was probably a Sharp Shinned Hawk in juvenile plumage. Tail was barred light & dark brown above, dark brown & white below. Possibly the bird had been caught by a Great Horned Owl.
Flowers: Some new to Joanne or to me included Indian Tobacco (… …), Arrow-Leaved Te… Thumb (… …), Bee B… . Plant with five leaves in … configuration at end of stalk about 6′ long. Did not find one with flowers or fruit. Possibly Indian Cucumber Root? Joanne thinks probably starflower.
Fishing: As on last visit (July 23–27 1988), my … white Hudson River … Spool was most effective lure. Best fish was about 1½ lbs, 14½ inches, caught casting from same place (west end of dam) from which I caught a good fish in 1988. Many thanks to Joanne for paddling the canoe which I fished on two mornings.
A wonderful week, but unfortunately Ken could not be here. many, many thanks to our good friends & hosts, the Fords.
Scrabble, lazing in the hammock, reading, shopping for crafts – wonderful to be here with Joanne – missed Ken. Sheila
Aug. 29, 1991: 85°
Leaving for Phila. on a perfect summer day.
Changes:
Drought has resulted in lowest lake level in recent memory. Low by at least 2 ft. Nothing in woods is the usual lush dampness. Ferns space themselves. Mushrooms are scarce.
Our spring was full. Most of the springs which feed the lake are dry.
Pop (85 yrs) has made a bullhead pond at the upper end.
Beech trees around house have been cut – and a stack of logs await wood-chopping. The two swing trees, a beech & a yellow birch, have been cut – and no new pair has been found for the swing.
Two sections of dry walls are mostly finished. Good top stones are still to be found. Poppop generously gave his blue tractor to work on this project. (Great fun!)
Trees planted: [from my Phily nursury (garden)] 3 Walnuts, 1 River Birch, 1 Silver Maple, 1 Oak, 2 Tulip Poplars
Inside: Record collection & record player from Phily.
2 yardsale lamps
2 stools from nearby Whittler’s Mother (!)
Tear Thumb is the razor-stemmed flower near back end porch.
Indian Tobacco
Dick T. thinks the pesky plant which Daddy calls Salmonberry is a bush Honeysuckle. he’s doing more research on this.
All this month the USSR is going through mighty upheavals, Gorbachev quit as communist party chief. A coup failed! A new world –
