July 3, 1992: I’m back, and I’m as morally reprehensible as I was two years ago, although I now have a thin veneer of respectability… Jason can attest to this. (But seriously, folks – many thanks for your hospitality during my third stay at the Ford household. Thank you very much.)

July 5, 1992: We’re outta here. the economy is bad, three fools are running for president, the rain forests are going, greed is still in, Sarejevo is burning, and as we speak, millions of people in the world are dying of AIDS and the royal marriage has broken up.
The lake, however, is fine.

Cheers! Henry
Walks, talks, fern hunts, recorder music, Scrabble, discussion of up-coming trips – – it gets to be one of the constants we can count on! It’s almost a shock to have to pack and leave behind what feels like home. Elizabeth

August 23-24, 1992: Daddy & Caroline drove up from Philly Sunday morning. Caroline had just arrived from London the night before after 2 weeks with Bill in Ireland, Scotland, & England. Wonderful trip except I was sick the whole time with morning sickness which in my case is all-day sickness (Baby due March 15). I was so excited to see Charlie!! I’ve been a couch blob for 2 days but it’s beautiful here & I playes the fixed player piano.

Aug. 24: Big BEAR! (2 days ago) Early afternoon, Mommy, Charlie and I were about to take naps when I saw a bear standing casually in the driveway near the hallway. We all dashed to the windows to look. A big, well-padded black bear. he looked at us for a few moments, then turned and ambled toward the driveway, then stopped, looked at us again, ambled up the driveway. I jumped in the car to follow him. he turned into the woods toward the other house. I drove down to the other house, where Poppop suggested I go sit at the top of the grade to see if he would come out of the woods and cross the road. So I did, and pretty soon I saw the bear come out of the woods at the end of the driveway and eat a pile of apples Poppop had dumped there. I watched him for a while then slowly inched the car down. When i got close the bear finally ran into the woods. Unfortunately Poppop didn’t see him!

Aug. 18–24: Joanne, Nina and Charlie spent almost a week together at the lake after Daddy picked Nina up at the airport in Philly, just returned from germany and Turkey. daddy here for a few days too, but got called away to Ohio after Nanny took a fall. he returned on Sunday with Caroline – just arrived from England – and continued on to NYC that night.
Charlie was delightful – kept “Gramma” busy all day with his boundless curiosity and was concerned at every meal that no one should eat up all the dessert. he precociously agreed to play Concentration every evening with Aunt Nina.
Blueberries are best we’ve ever seen! Joanne and Nina went twice to pick in the patch behind Ann’s house – could’ve stayed all day. The blueberries hung like bunches of purple grapes. Mommy made several wonderful pies and Charlie checked us all for blue teeth.
The weather cool already – had a fire going. Didn’t even think of swimming.
On Tues. Joanne, Nina, Caroline and Charlie made the trip back to Philly in an overstuffed Camry.

Sept. 5, 1992: New blueberry bowls (8) – from L.L. Bean.
Sept 6, 1992: Nina, Jeremy, & Clio (quadriped, grey fur, whiskers) arrived at Shunk Friday evening. A bear attempted to hitch a ride this way at maple Summit. During negotiations, we learned that he wanted to eat his supper on the way to the lake, and so we declined to take him aboard. the bear, Nina assures me, was “teen-aged.” We also sighted one red fox (bigger than Clio, smaller than the teen-aged bear) and many geese at the north end of the lake!
My computer, Eppy, now senile, and Nina’s spanking new computer, Concubine, were hard at work all weekend. Much work was accomplished, many classical records were listened to (when the record player cooperated), and peace & quiet was generally enjoyed – especially by Clio.

Oct. 13, 1992: About to leave on this beautiful fall day. red maples are afire! Poppop discovered 6 mountain ashes above the lake. A med. sized tree, they are loaded with heads of red berries. Also called Rowan Tree
The house is in order for winter – canoe in, swing down, chairs put away, etc.
Big event in Sept.: Paul and Wendy White were married on Sept. 19 in Chicago. All the siblings were in attendance. It was a most glorious wedding! (Paul: please do the details when you’re here) Welcome, Wendy!
