2001 – April 21: Ice is gone. All hollies have been nibbled to the stalks. hemlocks in the stone “well” have died. new planted trees look good. High water level.

2001 May 29 – Memorial Day Weekend
Mowed grass, planted ginkgo tree, saw fawn – newborn – lying coiled in the grass – nearly stepped on it. It never moved. Amer honeysuckle is taking over the Big Tree field — we must do something about it!
In bloom: lilacs

4 rattlesnake ferns!

Thank you so much for a lovely and memorable time with the Fords. We will remember this trip for years to come! Thank you again.
Norma & Paul Ryan

Thanks for the hospitality and good company. The sailing and … were memorial.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful — Even with the misadventures on the pond – two capsizings, started by Hewitt’s attempt to master sailing! Wish we scheduled more than one full day here. A paradise, especially with no mosquitoes!
Love ya! Paul Hewitt + Lillian Lee

August 5, 2001: Brief but wonderful visit! Such memories! It was so beautiful to introduce my own children to this powerful piece of my childhood and watch them create their own memories with their “second cousins.” You are all just what family should be.
A bittersweet visit of laughter and tears without my mother, who should have been here.
Cornelia Joanne

Favorite things:
Adam’s new kayak! Amadea’s new friend Rachael
Paddleboating Player piano (Sugar Sugar!)
Our tent city Giant shrimp
Madenhair fern Ping-pong
The barn

As told to Caroline by Edna by cell phone from her car:
The whole Dripps family came and had a great time! It was a wonderful reunion. Even with the long drive here, it was well worth it. It was great to see everyone & everyone’s kids. We stayed at the Lincoln Falls Lodge – it was wonderful and they recommend it to anybody.
Although we were sad Mummy couldn’t come, she was happy to be represented by her daughters.
Edna Dripps & family

A short, crowded, but fun vacation. Hot, sick people, lots of ice cream, 2 dogs… I need to spend a whole summer here again. Nice to see that my path is holding up.

August 8, 2001: I married Mark Suchman on June 24, 2001 in Providence, RI. We came to Shunk for a wedding reception on August 4 with all my siblings, nieces & nephews (9), the Baumunk clan, and some of the Kolms (Cornelia and Edna and families), along with Mark’s mother and Aunt Sylvia. Mommy had organized a lovely party with a tent and caterers. Gramma gave Mark and me a beautiful quilt which she’d made in 1987, when she thought I might be getting married soon. I’m glad she saved it all these years. better late than never!

I’m glad I waited this long too, or I might not have met Mark. At the party we introduced the next generation to “Pata Pata” and various other dances. Daddy can still do a pretty mean hambo.
It was wonderful to have everyone here together and to introduce Mark to the gang. We’re going home loaded down with blueberries (went picking along the lake).
Nina
(Great new little sailboat this year!)

August 9, 2001: My first (summertime) visit to Shunk, and I had a great time. It’s wonderful to have so many new relatives—although it makes it very hard to win at anything!
The party was terrific, as was the swimming, running, ping-pong and conversation. I’m very much enjoying my newly expanded family. And with all the great food, I hope my new family is enjoying my expanded self.
Same time next year! –Mark

Ian, Barbara, & Masha were here – Aug 01.

I definitely had a great summer this year (2001). I wish I could have stayed longer. I won the ping-pong tournament, sailed, and generally had a good time. Charlie (age 12)

This summer was great and I’m looking forward to go to school. Thomas (age 8)

Ford-White clan departing for a two-day trip back to Chicago. Paul, Wendy, Nate (7), Colin (5 – 1 month), Casey (46 days old b. 6/26/2001) and Iniki. Paul felt crummy w/ the flu for 5 days. Colin caught a fish. Nate went kayaking. We all had a marvelous time at Nina & Mark’s party

Monday Aug. 20, 2001
Ken, Joanne & Masha (2 – almost 3) will be heading back to Phila on Tues. On Wed. Ken & Masha go to N.M and Joanne to Boston to visit Elizabeth, who is seriously ill with cancer. Our summer joys of Nina & Mark’s wedding and party here, and the reunion of our whole family (minus Mark Minteer) have been wonderful for us parents (& grandparents). Elizabeth’s illness is a sadness, sobering to us all. We are blessed by these fine young people, and friends.

Masha spoke only German when she arrived after two months in Vienna. On the 13th day here, she began using Eng. sentences. Two days later—all was in English – “Papa speech”, not “Mama speech.” What a delightful child. We’re having so much fun with her!

New this summer:
Remodeled main bathroom
New dryer
Small pram sailboat
Adam’s kayak
2 sofas from Pottery Barn
Trees: Ash
2 maples – not too healthy
oak (died already)

Let’s celebrate!

Come to a party honoring the newlyweds

I have to say, spending my birthday in Shunk is one of the better ways I can think of. Once again, thank you for the opportunity to come to such a lovely retreat from the city. Now it’s back to work. The lake was especially beautiful – fog streamers coming up after the sun went down, faded everything to gray in the morning, then burning off to a bright sun-filled pond.
Rebecca Nielsen

This was one of the best trips up here ever. Nice weather, interesting walks, canoeing on the lake through the mist at 2AM. But best of all, seeing good friends again. Thank you all for everything!
Sean Blinn

I really enjoyed my stay at the lake for the holiday weekend. A bear cub wandered into the back yard! What an experience. May this place remain forever peaceful and natural.
harry eaton

Shunk has it all in spades – so to speak. Thanks for your gracious hospitality.
Damaris Christensen

Another fine trip to the lake – latest one ever. We’ve never come as late as Labor Day. I enjoyed the time with friends and four generations of relatives. I am reminded how much in debt I am to my grandparents who built the lake and all those since then who have helped maintain it. It’s a wonderful spot!
Jason

We saw a bear cub in the yard! I’ll always remember that. Year of lots of recent/looming job changes/moves for a lot of us. Good to know Shunk is always here!
Erica

9/29/01: Joanne and Ken 2-day (penultimate) visit, cleaning, packing, and enjoying cool fall weather in front of roaring fire. It’s 2.5 weeks since the terrorist tragedy.
