Found the house and grounds in good shape – except for the fleece pillows which were left on the sofas. They were made into mincemeat by the reident mice. J.

5/21/04: Arrived here with Teco and Seera after a month of driving around the country with my new Scamp travel trailer. Plan to be here all summer.
Adam

5/31/04: Came to avoid the office. Managed to walk around the lake everyday & (& stepping in every puddle!) Wheelerville & back everyday – I feel very studly for a city chick.
Abby Kay (friend of Jason’s via Rebecca)

5/31/04: Shunk is beautiful. Relatively warm for the end of May, but I didn’t quite go swimming. After 5 days, I feel ready to return to the city.
Rebecca Nielsen

5/31/04: I love Shunk. I’m glad my sister got me to come. I hope I am around next year for the Shunk trip.
Sharon Nielsen

5/31/04: Thanks to everyone for a great weekend, and for letting us come back. I feel more rested & relaxed than I have in months.
Sean Blinn

5/31/04: 3 Shunks in a row – and all good
David J. El…

5/31/04: A group of ten of us – good time as always.
Jason

5/31/04: Thanks very much again for yet another invitation to stay in one of my favorite places. Learned that Maple Summit has been around a long time even though I thought it was new when I saw it last year, but turns out it’s a Shunk tradition beautifully remodeled from a fire. Great to see Abby after all the years when being a resident made it harder for her to have a real life. It’s also great to have Adam as our host this year. It was terrific to see him (+ Teco + Seera)!
Erica + Harry

6-16-04: Ken & Joanne here for a BLP Board Mtg. Planted three elm trees (seedlings from the beautiful huge parent in Phila.) Also, three Siberian spruce and two Basswood trees have been planted by Mr. Petty. Adam (rah, rah) has moved in for the summer. Until July – J & K.

7-9-04: Joyca and I are blessed to be with the former First Family of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology once again. May the passing of the years bring further future rendezvous with our wonderful, gracious and always welcoming friends, Ken and Joanne.
Don and Joyce Salmon

July 19, ’04: Donna Wilhelm (lovely visit)

Rain, Rain, Rain, Rain, Rain – fires every a.m.

Last week in July – Heavy rain every day. Morning fires.

Aug. 7, 2004

July 31 – Aug 7: Daniel + I were here. Caroline

July 14 – Aug 7: It was WAY too rainy and I only went swimming once in 3 weeks but what can you do? Thomas Eisenhood

Aug. 2 – 9: Nina, Mark, & Isaiah
Isaiah, at one, has many words: peek-a-boo, Mommy, Daddy, Nana (for Grandma!), Pop, Charohy (for Charlie), Garby (for dumptruck), Blubbary (for blueberries) boat, car, bottle, go, bug, bee, whee (for swing). He did the geometric puzzle!

8/13/04: Mr. & Mrs. Ford
(and Adam and Paul and Jason and Wendy and Nina and Mark … etc.)
Thank you so much for everything. For all the fantastic dinners, for the hospitality, for sharing your company with me and basically accepting me as part of the family for a few weeks. The weather was a bit on the abnormal side as I’ve been told, but hey… You gotta make the best of it all, and I think we certainly did just that. Sure, maybe I gained a few pounds, got a bit sunburnt, got stranded on a rock with rapids all around me, got soaked and muddy on several occasions, and lost terribly at countless games… but it was worth it. It was all sooooo worth it. And I hope to see everyone again sometime. With love, and thanks again.
Evan Bobrick

8-13-04: Evan and I had a great time for the past 3 weeks. the weather was kinda cruddy, but as Thomas says, ‘What Can You Do?’ I love the new trampoline and ping-pong was great as usual. I really enjoyed the freedom I had this year. I’ll be back. –Charlie (age 15)

8/14/04: Paul Wendy Nate Colin & Casy
Stopped by for 3 nights as part of our first family road trip – 2500 miles so far and 700 to go. Our route took us through Sault Ste Marie ON, Montreal, Lake Winnipesaukee, Mt. Desert, Camden, Weir Meadow and here. Tonight’s destination is Cleveland and then home tomorrow. The kids enjoyed some down time here – no driving in familiar surroundings reading, game playing, and even swimming despite the cool overcast conditions. Casey had a great time on the trampoline and in the sand box and having lunch in the fairy place with her “fairy” grandmother.

08/20/04: Ken and Joanne off to Philly today after a bit less than 2 months here — now Adam regains his freedom! Great visits by Thomas, Charlie, Evan, Daniel, Caroline, Jason, Nina, Mark, Isaiah, Paul, Wendy, Nate, Colin, and Casey (whew!). Lots of good fireplace weather. Lots of Scrabble, NY Times on the web, good dinners in Eagles Mere, Williamsport, and Canton. Ken thrashed around trying to help David White get the BACTERIA BOOK started.
What about good dinners here?

8/20/2004: This was an historical summer – rainy nearly every day, and cool temperatures – so much so that most mornings needed a fire for a comfy breakfast. We did not have one campfire – too wet – nor did I go swimming. However, it’s been a good time for us, having Adam here, having Charlie and Thomas, and Charlie’s friend Evan for three weeks & having Nina’s, Caroline’s & Paul’s families at different times. The new trampoline was a great success as were the 2 extra kayaks of Paul’s—brought by Adam.
Five new trees planted: 3 Serbian Spruces & 2 Basswoods. Also, I planted 3 small elms from my huge beloved Elm in Phila.
A wood-turning center has been established! Nifty bowls have been turned. Everyone gets a chance to make a bowl! Adam is the teacher.
New items: 20 colorful napkins from Nina to go with the 20 napkin rings made by Henry.
Handsome knife holder (Adam)

Trail maintenance by Adam. Some new bridges. Ant-proof cereal boxes too.
Eureka! We found a new wonderful bog off Cherry Hill Rd – near the top. It’s a carpet of moss & sphagnum with a scattering of small hemlocks and cinnimon ferns. No pitcher plants in sight. Several Black Gum trees (surprise) and several of an unidentified species. Another precious place!
Joanne

8-27-04 → 8-29-04: Cara and Jason Lehrer visit from Cleveland. Hiked to the bog, visited Buttermilk falls, kayaked.

9-6-2004: A lovely visit as usual, with weather that was better than usual for this time of year. A highlight this year was making a wood bowl, which turned out well despite a big helping of beginners mistakes. Now I appreciate the ones I‘ve bought better! If only I could take Shunk’s timelessness with me … thanks.
Damaris Christensen

9/6/04: The weekend was gorgeous – went swimming Friday, and Saturday with a lovely fire by the lake Saturday night. I’m so glad for the opportunity to visit. It is a highlight of the summer.
Rebecca Nielsen

9-6-04: What a gorgeous weekend. The weather was beautiful. I’m glad we could actually swim in the lake. Thanks for allowing me to have a great ending to the summer
Sharon Nielsen

9/6/04: My first visit has been wonderfully relaxing, a break from a very long schedule. Canoeing by starlight was a terrific experience and I also enjoyed walking to Wheelerville and kayaking. Playing Boggle was a treat. Oh, and good food too!
Thad …

4/6/04: There’s no better way to end the summer than with a perfect short trip with good friends. Thanks again for … … .
Sean Blinn

4/6/04: Great weather for campfires, canoeing (sp?) and a few games of cards are always appreciated. Thank you for a great time!
Brian & Barbara

9/6/04: Fourth time up this summer – always great to be here.
Jason Ford

Oct. 5, 2004
Ken & Joanne made a brief stop to visit Adam & put a few things away for the winter. beautiful leaves. Lots of geese. Had a Sept. trip to fabulous China.

11/1/04: It’s been a long, wet summer and fall, but it sped by. I spent time hiking all over the Baumunk Lake Property, mapping the roads and paths. I also started the rebuilding of the path between the two houses. I finished a section from lake House I to the springhouse. Built one new bridge there, and re-decked a bridge on the path to Meditation Point. For all the time that i was here, i never saw any bears!
